Agricultural Education
Aldermere Achievers 4-H Club
The Aldermere Achievers is MCHT’s 4-H Club (in partnership with Knox-Lincoln Cooperative Extension) for youth ages 5-18, which is mainly a beef club where participants lease a calf, halter train it, and then show it at shows throughout New England. This club meets year-round and performs community service projects, fundraising projects, and does farm chores throughout the summer.
Beef Basics
For local and regional cattle farmers, MCHT provides a two-day clinic focused on the basics of raising beef cattle with emphasis on meeting the needs of today’s consumer. The program takes participants step by step through the beef industry, from selecting cattle that best fit today’s market to handling and managing the animals and their health. A variety of speakers present on topics such as artificial insemintation, fitting and showing, beef quality assurance, pasture management, and the importance of nutrition while also allowing time for participants to have their questions answered.
Farm Hands
Farm Hands is the premier youth program at Aldermere Farm where participants ages 10-18 work with the young Belted Galloway calves learning to halter train, groom, and lead them. This provides a community service to the Farm, because it allows the calves to get used to being around people, and to be well tempered and manageable. Participants learn about important agricultural, conservation, and environmental issues as well as skills such as team work, trust, and patience.
Master Gardener program
Aldermere Farm is part of the Knox-Lincoln Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program in which interested gardeners learn techniques on gardening, and then volunteer hours throughout the year at a specific site. Aldermere Farm is one such site in Rockport where the Master Gardeners plant the gardens every year. Master Gardeners earn certificates and gain great experience.
